Peaceful Polling Marks Start of West Bengal Assembly Elections

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar exercised his democratic right on Thursday, casting his vote at Balurghat polling station during the initial phase of West Bengal Assembly elections. Describing the voting process as peaceful, Majumdar commended the Election Commission for ensuring smooth conduct and encouraged citizens to cast their votes in substantial numbers.

Despite his overall appreciation, Majumdar urged the Election Commission to enhance its vigilance in certain areas, like Murshidabad, to maintain order throughout the electoral process. He reported that polling was proceeding calmly in Nandigram, predicting a sweeping victory for Suvendu Adhikari in the constituency.

The first phase of these elections involves 152 constituencies, with the second phase scheduled for April 29, covering a total of 294 Assembly seats. This election represents a fierce competition between the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, aiming for a fourth consecutive term, and the BJP seeking to form the government after gaining ground in past elections. Votes will be counted on May 4.
