Marathi Mandate Sparks Language Debate in Maharashtra

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has voiced his support for Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut's call to make Marathi a mandatory language in Maharashtra. Athawale emphasizes that people arriving in Mumbai for work should not face threats of license cancellations due to language barriers.

He acknowledges the importance of learning the local language to integrate effectively but advocates for a more compassionate approach towards those who are yet to master Marathi. According to Athawale, everyone coming to Mumbai, a city that embraces diversity, should feel welcome regardless of their linguistic abilities.

MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande also stresses the significance of learning local languages for business purposes across different states in India. He criticizes those who refuse to learn Marathi, warning of consequences. Past violent incidents involving MNS workers against non-Marathi speakers add to the ongoing controversy. Additionally, State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the enforcement of Marathi for rickshaw drivers in the state from May 1.
