U.S. Raids Houston Fuel Trader Amid Mexico Smuggling Probe
U.S. authorities executed a search at Ikon Midstream, a Houston-based fuel trader, as part of an investigation into fuel-smuggling operations involving Mexican cartels. The raid targeted company computers and documents, following a Reuters report linking Ikon Midstream to alleged smuggling activities with Mexico's Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
U.S. authorities raided the offices of Ikon Midstream, a Houston-based fuel trader under investigation for alleged involvement in fuel smuggling operations in Mexico. The operation, backed by a federal search warrant, targeted the company's Houston headquarters for computers and documents possibly linked to illicit activities.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the search followed a 2025 Reuters investigation, revealing Ikon Midstream's alleged role in diesel smuggling to Mexico. The company's legal representative, Joseph Slovacek, confirmed the search, attributing it to Reuters' persistent scrutiny. No arrests accompanied the raid, and the company denied any wrongdoing.
The Reuters report detailed how Mexican cartels, alleged beneficiaries of the smuggling scheme, leverage U.S. fuel exports, aided by falsified trade documents, to dodge hefty import duties in Mexico. As part of wider efforts to curb cartel revenue, the U.S. government has intensified measures against such illicit trade.
