Delhi's Heat Wave Action Plan: Combating Scorching Summers

As temperatures in Delhi reach alarming levels, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the strict implementation of the Heat Wave Action Plan 2026. The plan is a response to a troubling trend: Delhi experiencing over 40°C for nearly 40 consecutive days in recent years, with assessments identifying high-risk heat zones via satellite data.

Notable hotspots include Ayanagar, which has hit 45.5°C, along with Najafgarh and Safdarjung. Other affected regions such as Wazirpur and Jahangirpuri are also under scrutiny. Special measures have been rolled out, including increased ORS availability, Quick Response Teams, and water tankers to protect vulnerable areas from heat waves.

Departments have been instructed to provide water and shade for humans and animals, with water points installed in public spots and schools. Meanwhile, construction work may pause during peak heat, with added protective gear for workers. The Health Department has alerted 339 centres across 13 districts, set up 'cool rooms' in hospitals, and reinforced emergency power protocols amidst soaring demand.
