Rajasthan's power distribution companies are working on developing decentralised battery energy storage systems to utilise surplus solar power and improve electricity supply during peak hours, officials said on Tuesday. The plan involves setting up battery storage systems in areas where excess decentralised solar energy is being generated under the PM Kusum scheme and rooftop solar installations. This is expected to help maintain supply during morning and evening peak demand periods. Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar, while reviewing the performance of discoms at Vidyut Bhawan, directed officials to expedite the initiative as a pilot project. Expanding storage capacity is essential to make the state self-reliant in the energy sector and improve power supply, he added. Energy Secretary and Discoms Chairperson Aarti Dogra said that Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer discoms will develop standalone decentralised battery energy storage systems to ensure optimal utilisation of solar energy being produced. The minister also reviewed progress on smart metering, reduction in transmission and commercial losses, and power supply arrangements during the summer season. He said smart metering under the Centre's RDSS scheme is ensuring accurate billing for consumers and stressed the need for further measures to reduce losses. Officials informed that over 3.781 million smart meters have been installed in the state so far. Under the RDSS scheme, 179 new 33 kV grid substations have been set up to address voltage issues. In addition, around 60 per cent of feeders have been segregated to reduce tripping and improve load balancing.
