Trump Cranks Up Sanctions Against Cuba
The Trump administration has expanded sanctions on Cuba targeting its economy and government affiliates. This executive order includes potential sanctions on foreign entities in Cuban sectors like energy and finance, with secondary sanctions for others engaging with them, raising international tensions.
On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to intensify sanctions against Cuba, as reported by Reuters. This move, confirmed by two White House officials, is aimed at increasing pressure on Havana following the removal of Venezuela's leader.
The new sanctions focus on individuals and entities involved with Cuba's security apparatus or complicit in corruption and human rights violations. The White House has confirmed the sanctions could extend to any foreign figures involved in sectors like energy and defense within the Cuban economy. Secondary sanctions apply to transactions with those affected.
Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, criticized these measures, claiming they violate the United Nations Charter. Trump has identified this action as a warning to Cuba, alleging it maintains links with Iran and Hezbollah. Tensions have risen as the U.S. demands economic reforms and reparations from Cuba.
