Nigerians Seek Safe Return Amid South African Unrest

At least 130 citizens from Nigeria have sought assistance from their government to return home, following protests in South Africa targeting foreign nationals, announced Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

This marks the initial wave applying for Nigeria's new repatriation initiative, initiated in response to fears of escalating tensions. South Africa witnessed rallies in major cities like Pretoria and Johannesburg, where demonstrators called for stricter immigration enforcement, blaming foreigners for job and security challenges.

Migrant rights activists argue that foreigners have become unjust scapegoats for South Africa's economic difficulties. Last month, South Africa pledged to combat xenophobic violence after incidents against nationals from countries like Ghana were reported. Further demonstrations are scheduled, with Nigeria actively engaging with South African authorities to mitigate risks to its citizens.
