The incident occurred during maintenance work, involving a smoke extractor, leading to a fire and partial structural collapse at the facility.
The fire has now been extinguished, as confirmed by Kazakhstan's emergency ministry, which was cited by Russian Interfax news agency. Kazzinc is noted as Kazakhstan's predominant producer of not only zinc but also lead, copper, gold, and silver.
The Kazzinc plant is majority-owned by the mining giant Glencore, with a 30% stake held by Kazakhstan's state fund, Samruk-Kazyna. Authorities are currently probing the causes behind the explosion as efforts focus on ensuring safety at the site.
