Gulf Tensions: Mystery Oil Slick Near Iran's Kharg Island

Iran's top environmental authority announced that a suspected oil spill near the country's main oil hub, Kharg Island, is likely the result of a tanker discharging waste water, rather than a facility leak. This suspicion was confirmed through satellite imagery covering the affected sea area.

The spill, depicted in satellite images from May 6-8 as a grey and white slick, extended over the western waters of the 5-mile long island. Iranian Vice-President Shina Ansari confirmed that no Iranian oil facilities report leaks, pinning responsibility on a foreign tanker dumping ballast water.

Despite initial concerns from environmental groups and experts, including Louis Goddard from Data Desk, Iran's Oil Terminals Company assures no leaks have been detected. The cause of the spill remains under investigation, with international observers closely monitoring developments.
