India's Bold Move: Boosting Clean Energy with Coal Gasification

The Union Cabinet has taken a significant step towards promoting clean energy by approving a Rs 37,500-crore incentive for coal gasification projects. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the scheme, highlighting an expected investment of Rs 3 lakh crore to gasify 75 million tonnes of coal. This initiative is a stride towards reducing dependence on imports.

With 401 million tonnes of coal reserves, sufficient for 200 years, India aims to become self-reliant in energy production. Coal gasification, the process of converting dry fuel into synthetic gas, offers an alternative fuel source, supporting methanol and hydrogen production while cutting carbon emissions. This scheme is a response to the current geopolitical climate and aims to reposition India's energy sector.

The ambitious project targets achieving 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030, reinforcing India's status as the second-largest coal producer and consumer globally. Experts believe that gasification could be the key to unlocking the full potential of India's domestic reserves through efficient and clean energy solutions.
