AI Surge Powers S&P 500 and Nasdaq to Record Highs Amid Inflation Concerns
Tech shares related to artificial intelligence helped the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rebound, despite rising inflation and Federal Reserve monetary policy concerns. The PHLX Semiconductor index also made gains, while geopolitical tensions and market responses influenced stock movements.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq rode the wave of tech shares, particularly those tied to artificial intelligence, to new heights on Wednesday. This surge helped the market overcome hotter-than-expected inflation data, even as the Federal Reserve seems set to maintain its restrictive monetary stance.
The PHLX Semiconductor index rebounded sharply, gaining 2.8%, aiming for a record close. Despite this, the Labor Department's report showed a notable 1.4% rise in producer prices due to crude supply disruptions, hinting at persistent inflation pressures. Boston Fed President Susan Collins notes a possible rate hike if inflation continues.
Meanwhile, geopolitical dynamics also played a role, with U.S. President Donald Trump's diplomatic visit to Beijing alongside industry leaders like Elon Musk and Nvidia's Jensen Huang. They discussed trade issues amidst concerns over U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. As part of market dynamics, Nvidia and Tesla shares rose, while some cryptocurrency firms saw declines.
