Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has appealed to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to implement measures favoring aquaculture farmers amid escalating shrimp feed prices.
In a recent review meeting, prompted by Special Chief Secretary B Rajasekhar, state officials resolved to protect farmers' interests through potential incentives for fish meal exports and regulation of soy imports. Rising costs for raw materials like soy, fish meal, and fish oil are impacting shrimp production costs significantly, with a noticeable price hike reflected in the market.
Meeting attendees, including Fisheries Commissioner Ramashankar Naik and scientists from the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, underscored the dire situation for farmers. They advocated for an immediate review of current feed prices and the introduction of a monthly pricing mechanism linked to raw material costs, similar to the poultry sector, to ensure farmers can harvest shrimps without financial strain.
