Meghalaya's GI-tagged pineapples, considered among the finest in the world for their flavour and aroma, were presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his recent visit to the West Asian nation, an official said here on Thursday.

The pineapples, grown in the pristine hilly terrains of Meghalaya, are known for their high sugar content, low acidity and rich aroma, making them one of the most sought-after fruit varieties from the Northeast.

''These GI-tagged pineapples are renowned for their exceptional sweetness and unique flavour profile. They represent the rich agricultural heritage and natural bounty of Meghalaya and made a perfect gift for the President,'' an official said.

The fruit is also valued for its nutritional benefits as it contains high levels of bromelain, an enzyme known to aid digestion and reduce inflammation, besides being rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants.

''The presentation of Meghalaya's pineapples on such a prestigious international platform is a matter of pride for the state and its farmers,'' the official said.

The gesture also highlighted India's efforts to promote indigenous and GI-tagged products from the Northeast through diplomatic and cultural engagements, the official added.
