Mallammal, a woman hailing from the Badagas, an ethnolinguistic community in the Nilgiris district, turned 100 on Saturday, and the village and her family celebrated the occasion, claiming she was the first centenarian from the community.
Family members and the people of Mallikorai village, where about 50 houses are located, organised a grand birthday party for Mallammal. Her four farmer sons, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and the villagers participated in the occasion and wished her.
The villagers made special arrangements to celebrate Mallamma's birthday. Her relatives and people from her native Kadanadu village in the district, too, visited her at Mallikorai near Udhagamandalam and greeted her.
The villagers decked her in traditional Badagas tribal clothes and traditional jewellery. Traditional music was played, and people danced on the occasion.
