Ensure uninterrupted power supply across UP amid heatwave: Adityanath to officials

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday directed officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply across villages and cities amid the rising electricity demand due to intense heatwave conditions in Uttar Pradesh.

The electricity demand in the state increased from 501 million units per day to 561 million units per day in April-May due to the rising temperatures, while the peak demand touched 30,339 MW, an official statement said.

Uttar Pradesh ranked second in the country in meeting the power demand during May 20-22, it said.

Reviewing the power supply situation in the presence of Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma and Minister of State Kailash Singh Rajput, Adityanath said continuous monitoring should be ensured at every level so that common people, farmers, traders and industries do not face any power crisis.

According to the official statement, the total power generation capacity of the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited has increased to 13,388 MW, including 9,120 MW from thermal power plants at Anpara, Obra, Harduaganj, Parichha, Jawaharpur and Panki. Hydel projects are contributing 526.4 MW.

The statement said the capacity has increased by 86 per cent between 2022 and 2026, while nearly 10,000 MW is also being sourced from non-conventional energy sources.

Adityanath directed officials to further strengthen the transmission network and fix feeder-wise accountability while ensuring swift action in case of transformer and feeder faults. He also said permission must be obtained before excavation work at locations having underground cables.

The statement said Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited is currently operating 60,858 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 715 substations with a total capacity of 2,05,632 mega volt-amperes (MVA).

Transmission network availability has reached 99.30 per cent, while transmission losses have reduced to 3.2 per cent, it said.

The number of damaged power transformers declined from 429 in 2022-23 to 87 in 2025-26, while damage to transformers above 100 KVA reduced from 39,177 to 20,292 during the same period, it said.

Adityanath directed the officials to manage supply through power banking arrangements with 12 states and said work was underway to add 10,719 MW of additional capacity by 2029 through wind, battery energy storage, pumped hydro and hybrid energy projects.

He said electricity supply was directly linked to public welfare, irrigation, trade and industry, and warned that strict action would be taken against negligence by field officers.
