In a proactive response to mounting international health alerts, the Andhra Pradesh Health Department initiated an Ebola screening camp at Vijayawada International Airport. This precautionary measure, which began on Tuesday, involves detailed health checks for passengers arriving from Singapore. The government-deployed medical teams are conducting thermal screenings and checking for symptoms to promptly identify any suspected Ebola cases, thereby ensuring public safety.
Health authorities have reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm. The screenings come as part of routine global preventive monitoring in light of international health advisories. Passengers are also being advised on the importance of self-reporting symptoms such as fever, weakness, vomiting, or any history of bleeding. Concurrently, former WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan emphasized India's potential in advancing Ebola research and vaccine development through collaboration with WHO and ICMR.
The urgency of these measures is underscored by the recent Ebola outbreak concerns in parts of Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, as flagged by the World Health Organization (WHO). Swaminathan expressed deep concern over this development, noting that the outbreak's rare strain presents difficulties in detection and treatment. WHO has already classified this as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, with Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reporting escalating cases in affected regions.
