Himachal Pradesh witnessed a vibrant electoral atmosphere during the second phase of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) elections, as nearly 80% of voters turned up across 1,276 Gram Panchayats. Held from 7 AM to 3 PM, the polling via ballot papers and boxes proceeded peacefully throughout the day.
The State Election Commission reported a significant initial turnout, with 21.36% of votes cast in the first two hours. State Election Commissioner Anil Kumar Khachi highlighted that this phase's participation outshone the 76% turnout recorded in the 2021 elections. A total of 17.30 lakh voters, including 17 third-gender individuals, were eligible to vote, with 13.74 lakh participating.
Women decisively influenced the elections, surpassing male turnout in nine districts, with Kullu District reaching an impressive 86% female turnout. Despite this trend, districts like Lahaul-Spiti, Shimla, and Kinnaur saw men leading the turnout. The election also saw colour-coded ballot papers being used to simplify the voting process.
