Assam Achieves Remarkable Improvement in Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates
Assam's Maternal Mortality Ratio has decreased significantly from 490 in 2001-03 to 125 in 2020-22. The state's Infant Mortality Rate has also seen notable improvement. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state has achieved a significant reduction in its Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), now standing at 125 for 2020-22, a substantial drop from 490 in the 2001-03 period.
Speaking at a press conference, Sarma credited the dedicated efforts of the Assam government over the last two decades for this improvement. He also noted that Assam's Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has substantially improved, reflecting advances in the state's healthcare.
The Chief Minister further asserted that Assam no longer holds the highest MMR in the country, surpassing states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Current IMR data also show a decline from 68 in 2005 to 32 in 2022.
