The National Medical Commission (NMC) has flagged serious deficiencies in several medical colleges across West Bengal, Union Minister Anupriya Patel informed Parliament on Tuesday. Issues such as inadequate faculty, infrastructure, and clinical operations have led to 34 institutions in 2024-25 and 37 in 2025-26 facing scrutiny.

During a session in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel elaborated that these shortcomings were identified in both government and private colleges, prompting the issuance of show cause notices. Certain facilities were fined for 2024-25 violations, whereas others non-compliant in 2025-26 received conditional renewals of MBBS seats.

The NMC, on May 19, issued alerts to stakeholders, warning against unauthorized medical colleges granting unsanctioned admissions. Sanjiban Hospital and Medical College, notably, was operating without necessary NMC approval, misleading students about its legal standing.
