Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences have raised alarms over the correlation between smoking and an elevated risk of slipped discs, medically referred to as lumbar disc herniation.
This warning followed a successful surgical intervention on a patient battling recurrent lumbar disc herniation. The procedure, led by surgeon Dr. Bhaskar Borgohain, involved a tubular microdiscectomy to alleviate pressure on the S1 nerve root.
Dr. Borgohain noted that smoking contributes to spinal disc vulnerability due to the damage caused by toxic hydrocarbons, emphasizing the need for individuals to quit smoking to prevent spinal issues and improve overall musculoskeletal health.
