Current Health News Briefs: FDA Leadership Change, Vertex Trial Setback, & More

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday appointed Sean Keveney as its new chief counsel, with the responsibility of managing all legal affairs at the health agency. Previously, he served as acting general counsel at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals experienced a significant setback in its drug development efforts. Its shares tumbled 14.4% after the failure of a mid-stage trial for a non-opioid painkiller. The company will also halt a study for expanded use of an approved pain drug.

The Florida Department of Health reported 21 cases of E. coli linked to raw milk consumption. Meanwhile, a tragic Manhattan shooting heightens awareness of CTE in sports, and major chemical companies settle environmental claims with New Jersey for $875 million over PFAS pollution.
