The Tele-MANAS helpline, launched by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has emerged as a crucial mental health support service, receiving over 24 lakh calls since October 2022. Run by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, the helpline gets around 2,511 calls daily, highlighting the pressing mental health concerns across India.

According to an RTI filed by activist Sujeet Swami, the helpline, which caters to various demographics and offers free 24/7 tele-mental health services, has become a beacon of hope, particularly for underserved areas. Uttar Pradesh, leading with 4,39,164 calls, reflects a significant mental health burden. Mental health issues are prevalent among people aged 31-60, accounting for the highest number of calls.

The helpline addresses a range of stressors, including study, job, and financial stress, relationship issues, and family conflicts. Sujeet Swami emphasized the need for a national mental health policy and greater public awareness. His Public Interest Litigation in Rajasthan advocates for mental health curricula and counselors in educational institutions to counter suicide rates among youth.
