Gaza's Struggle: The Human Toll of War on Children and Mothers

Nancy Abu Matroud, a 22-year-old Palestinian mother, has faced unimaginable loss during Gaza's relentless war, having already lost three of her children. Now, she is in a desperate battle to save her two-year-old daughter, Etra, a cancer patient who is deprived of crucial medical care due to the shutdown of Gaza City's children's hospital during Israel's most recent offensive.

The ongoing violence has compounded the suffering of many Gazan families, with disease, displacement, malnutrition, and inadequate medical services severely affecting children and pregnant women. Abu Matroud, six months pregnant with twins, endured three days of travel with her family while fleeing Israeli bombardment, only to lose both twins to the harsh conditions, exacerbated by a lack of hospital equipment, as described by UNICEF spokesperson Jonathan Crickx.

The father, Faraj al-Ghalayini, voices the anguish shared by many parents, as resources run dry amidst Israeli shelling. Displacement, famine, and inadequate health services have further deteriorated living conditions in Gaza, drawing attention to the dire humanitarian crisis marked by premature births and acute malnutrition, which UNICEF attempts to mitigate, treating thousands of young children during this ongoing conflict.
