The episode occurred on April 27 when Rithu was playing with friends and encountered an Indian spectacled cobra hiding in a burrow. Despite immediate action by locals, crucial antivenom was unavailable locally, necessitating a transfer to the Government Medical College Hospital in Pariyaram.
Rithu's condition remained critical, leading to her passing on Thursday morning. This incident adds to a concerning trend, with eight snakebite-related deaths in Kerala within the past 10 days. Authorities have launched an investigation as the body awaits a post-mortem examination.
