Delhi Takes Bold Step: Making Leprosy a Notifiable Disease

The Delhi government is poised to list leprosy as a notifiable disease under the Delhi Epidemic Diseases Act, aiming to boost surveillance, enable early detection, and improve treatment adherence across the capital, officials announced Friday.

Once implemented, healthcare institutions will be obliged to report leprosy cases to the District Leprosy Officer, facilitating targeted interventions and timely diagnoses. This initiative aligns with steps taken by states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, aiming to ensure free and dignified treatment for patients through Multi-Drug Therapy.

Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized the significance of this move in identifying hidden cases and curbing transmission. The expected notification, pending approval, will position Delhi at the forefront of combating leprosy. Despite India's past achievements in leprosy eradication, underreporting remains an issue, particularly in private healthcare settings.
