British Nationals Isolate Amid Hantavirus Scare on Cruise Ship

Two British nationals potentially exposed to the hantavirus during a cruise ship journey are self-isolating after returning to the UK, health authorities report. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is collaborating with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to manage the repatriation of passengers from the MV Hondius.

Despite the virus being primarily transmitted through rodent droppings, UKHSA's Dr. Meera Chand reassures that public risk remains very low. Measures are in place for isolating and monitoring individuals returning from the cruise. Meanwhile, contact tracing is underway to prevent further spread of the virus, which in extreme cases can cause severe respiratory illness.

Close coordination is ongoing between the UKHSA, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and other government entities to ensure the safety and health of passengers as the ship heads to the Canary Islands. The WHO is overseeing the spread containment efforts. No passengers, including British citizens, currently show symptoms but remain under strict precautionary protocols.
