In a case highlighting serious medical negligence, a medical officer from the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Valpoi, North Goa, has been suspended following the tragic amputation of an 11-year-old boy's leg. The incident arose after the boy, initially treated for a leg fracture, developed gangrene.

According to the inquiry, the boy's condition was poorly managed from the outset. A plaster slab was applied by an unsupervised multi-tasking staff member, Suresh, without adequate supervision from on-duty medical officer Dr. Yavanti Gawade. This critical oversight allegedly contributed to the boy's deteriorating condition.

As the situation worsened, the boy was referred to Goa Medical College, where amputation became unavoidable. An internal committee found significant lapses in the treatment protocol and has declared Gawade responsible for the negligence. The medical officer has been suspended without pay, awaiting a comprehensive expert review.
