Africa's leading public health authority has confirmed an Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri province. The outbreak, announced by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday, has already resulted in 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths, primarily in Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones.
The Africa CDC is convening an urgent meeting with Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, and global partners to strengthen cross-border surveillance and prepare for a robust response to curb the disease's spread. So far, four deaths have occurred among laboratory-confirmed cases, as efforts to sequence the virus strain continue.
Authorities are particularly concerned about the outbreak's potential to spread further due to the urban nature of Bunia and Rwampara, as well as the mining-related mobility in Mongwalu. Ebola spreads through contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, and this outbreak poses a significant health challenge.
