The World Health Organization has launched a new Ebola treatment centre in Bunia, eastern Congo, amidst celebrations of five recoveries from a rare strain of the virus. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the centre's potential in combating the ongoing outbreak.

Ghebreyesus lauded the recovery of five patients, marking a positive turn in handling the outbreak. Despite lacking approved vaccines or treatments for the current Bundibugyo strain, the new facility is bolstered by improved health infrastructure and support from organizations like Doctors Without Borders. However, local skepticism about stringent healthcare measures persists.

The continuous spread of Ebola is exacerbated by local conflicts and distrust, with some communities launching attacks on health centers over burial practices. The WHO and partner organizations stress community involvement as key to halting the outbreak.

Insecurity remains a major concern as armed groups disrupt efforts. Nevertheless, health officials like Pierre Akilimali express optimism, emphasizing the role of symptomatic treatment in achieving patient recoveries.
