A psychiatric hospital near Paris is seeing positive results by incorporating therapy donkeys into patient care. The unique unit at Ville-Evrard hospital in Neuilly-sur-Marne offers an alternative treatment that promotes mental health recovery.
Patients engage with the donkeys through activities like walking and grooming. "It's akin to medication," said Nathalie, a patient, describing the relief this brings. The therapy sessions are provided at no cost, funded by France's public health system.
Audrey Seffar, a nurse, noted remarkable progress in patients like Nathalie, who had previously been hesitant to leave the cart used for physical difficulties. The social interactions facilitated by the therapy help reduce feelings of isolation for others, like Jerome, another participant.
Launched by Ermelinda and François Hadey, the program began in 2016 and has expanded to include a variety of animals like goats and rabbits. Recognized as an official healthcare unit since 2022, it highlights the importance of animal-assisted therapy, though further scientific study is needed for wider acceptance within psychiatry.
