Cambodia has announced a suspension of fuel imports from Thailand, marking a sharp escalation in diplomatic tensions between the neighboring nations. This decision follows a fatal incident involving a Cambodian soldier in a disputed border area, exacerbating long-standing territorial disagreements.
Prime Minister Hun Manet revealed the measure via social media, effective at midnight, after diplomatic efforts by Thailand's PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra to defuse a political crisis stemming from a leaked phone conversation with Cambodia's Senate President, Hun Sen.
The border conflict, rooted in colonial-era demarcations, saw renewed friction with recent troop clashes. Both countries have since closed several border crossings, and economic actions include Cambodia's ban on Thai media and import goods, raising regional tension further.
