The 13th French Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade (13th DBLE) hosted the eighth edition of the Indo-French exercise SHAKTI from June 18 to July 1, 2025, in France, according to a release by the French Embassy in India. The exercise saw participation from over 500 French legionnaires and military personnel from various units, including the French Foreign Legion, Air and Space Force, and Navy.
An Indian contingent comprising 90 personnel, predominantly from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles battalion, took part alongside 50 armoured vehicles and fighter jets. The joint drills were conducted in two phases. The first phase from June 18 to 21 in Aveyron's Monclar district focused on joint training for shooting, order issuance, and unit combinations.
The second phase, held from June 22 to 26 in Herault, involved deploying the Monclar Combined Arms Tactical Group in a semi-urban combat exercise, employing day and night tactics, the release stated. Previous exercises in 2024 and ongoing strategic partnership efforts strive to enhance interoperability and share best practices in military technology.
Exercise SHAKTI provided a crucial platform for Indian and French military personnel to prepare for sub-conventional combat under the United Nations Charter, while bolstering ties and reinforcing the Indo-French defense alliance. Indo-French military engagements like GARUDA and VARUNA demonstrate shared commitments to peace, stability, and security.
This exercise, conducted at Camp Larzac, La Cavalerie in Southern France, features 90 Indian Army personnel primarily from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, collaborating with the French Army's 13e Demi-Brigade de Legion Étrangère. According to an official statement, the Indian Army contingent departed for the 8th edition of Exercise Shakti, aiming to enhance counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban areas.
