PM Modi's Strategic Move: Strengthening India-Maldives Ties on Historic Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the Maldives signifies a significant milestone in the longstanding relations between New Delhi and Male. Former diplomat Mahesh Sachdev described the visit as a "hard-won understanding" following a period of diplomatic strain. Invited by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu for the 60th anniversary of the nation's independence and bilateral ties, this visit comes at a crucial moment to reset the diplomatic relationship.

The bilateral ties experienced challenges, especially after President Muizzu's initial push for the withdrawal of Indian naval personnel. Elected with a campaign leaning towards Maldivian nationalism and a desire for equidistant policies, President Muizzu's stance initially created friction. Diplomatic tensions escalated when Maldivian officials made derogatory remarks about PM Modi. However, Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer's subsequent visit to India helped ease tensions by distancing the government from such statements.

India has played a pivotal role in stabilizing the Maldives' financial situation, providing substantial financial assistance including a USD 400 million swap line. Ahead of Modi's visit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted New Delhi's efforts to support the Maldives in bolstering its foreign exchange reserves. The visit, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties, aims to strengthen cooperation and mutual understanding between the two nations.
