Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the United Kingdom from July 23-24, with the primary goal of enhancing the bilateral relationship between India and the UK. A focal point of the visit is the decisive signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which has been in negotiation for three years. The agreement is expected to eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK and reduce those on 90% of British goods, which could potentially double bilateral trade by 2030 from the current $60 billion mark.

Regular high-level engagements have elevated India-UK relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including a significant increase in bilateral trade, which reached a record $55 billion in 2024. During PM Modi's visit, discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will focus on defense, climate, innovation, and areas like trade and education. They are also set to address the issue of Khalistani extremists in the UK, which India has highlighted as a matter of concern. The UK government has ensured India that necessary actions will be undertaken to resolve this issue.

Beyond trade and political discourse, PM Modi will meet with King Charles III and continue efforts to further India-UK cooperation in fields such as climate action, healthcare, and education. The Indian diaspora in the UK, forming about 2.7% of its population, plays a crucial role in strengthening cultural and economic bonds between the two nations. Following his UK visit, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives to further India-Maldives relations and participate in the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations.
