Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a significant visit to the United Kingdom, the first stop in his two-nation diplomatic mission, which will also include the Maldives. The visit, spanning July 23-24, is pivotal for the long-awaited signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), aimed at bolstering economic relations between the two nations.

The FTA, in negotiation for three years, promises substantial economic benefits, including the elimination of tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the UK and a reduction on 90% of British exports. This agreement is expected to double bilateral trade by 2030 from its current USD 60 billion level. In meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Modi is also set to discuss regional and global issues, reflecting how historical India-UK engagements have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Beyond trade, Modi's agenda includes exploring defense and security collaborations, particularly concerning military exchanges and technological advancements. The trip also seeks to address sensitive issues like the presence of Khalistani extremists in the UK, with both countries committed to discussing extradition and maintaining social harmony. Modi will also strengthen ties through talks on climate action and education, highlighting the vital role of the Indian diaspora in enriching UK society.
