In a statement on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the enduring friendship between India and the Maldives, stating that for India, it's always 'friendship first.' The Prime Minister emphasized the Maldives' strategic importance in India's Neighbourhood First policy and Ocean Vision.
The Maldives, as India's closest neighbor, is a prime recipient of India's benevolence and strategic partnership. Modi reiterated India's role as a first responder during crises, whether delivering essential goods or aiding in economic stabilization post-Covid. Both nations are commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations, reflective of their historic ties.
During the celebration, Modi congratulated Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on 60 years of Maldivian Independence and expressed his gratitude for being the Guest of Honour. Both leaders launched commemorative postage stamps symbolizing bilateral friendship, and Muizzu acknowledged India's support in defense and housing initiatives and proposed enhancing tourism links.
