US President Donald Trump on Monday slashed the timeframe for Russian President Vladimir Putin to broker a peace deal with Ukraine. Initially granted a 50-day window, the deadline has now been compressed to 10 to 12 days, according to CNN. Trump made the announcement at his golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland, alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Trump expressed a desire to avoid imposing sanctions on Russia but indicated readiness to do so if necessary. 'It would be sanctions and maybe tariffs, secondary tariffs. I don't want to do that to Russia,' Trump remarked, highlighting the importance of a diplomatic resolution. 'Common sense suggests a deal is in everyone's best interest,' he added.
Earlier, Trump stated that his decision to shorten the deadline was based on prior experiences of aborted negotiations. 'We thought we had made progress, but then President Putin continues aggressive actions, like shelling Kyiv,' Trump explained. The US President also discussed strengthening US-UK relations and trade during talks with Prime Minister Starmer, expressing optimism about future collaborations with the UK and the EU.
