The FBI has officially established a standalone office in Wellington, New Zealand, as part of efforts to counter China's growing influence in the Pacific, FBI Director Kash Patel announced Thursday, according to the Taipei Times.

Patel, after holding discussions with senior New Zealand government officials, stated that the new office will enhance the longstanding collaboration between the United States and New Zealand. The US embassy in Wellington released a statement quoting Patel, who emphasized the importance of joint efforts in tackling global issues, including countering China's influence, the narcotics trade, and cyber threats.

New Zealand and the United States are part of the 'Five Eyes' intelligence-sharing network, which also includes Australia, Canada, and the UK. Patel underscored the need for this partnership, highlighting that the FBI requires support from all member countries to succeed. New Zealand officials welcomed the new office's potential for improving national safety.

The US embassy also noted that the Wellington office will manage FBI cooperation in surrounding regions such as Antarctica and the Pacific Islands, reinforcing America's dedication to counteracting Chinese influence in the Pacific, the Taipei Times reported.
