India Stands Firm Amid US Criticism on Russia Ties

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday reaffirmed the country's steadfast relationship with Russia, describing it as 'steady and time-tested,' amidst mounting criticism from the United States. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the media in the weekly briefing, underscored that India's international relationships are evaluated on their intrinsic merit and not through the perspectives of third nations.

Jaiswal's remarks followed a series of criticisms from US officials, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who objected to India's continued imports of discounted Russian oil amid Ukraine conflict-linked Western sanctions. Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 8, was partly justified by India's procurement of Russian oil and military assets. Meanwhile, Rubio identified India's Russian oil imports as a 'point of irritation' in US-India relations, suggesting these purchases indirectly finance the Ukrainian conflict.

Jaiswal clarified that India's energy imports are primarily driven by global market trends and domestic strategic interests, noting the absence of any specific developments regarding a halt by Indian oil firms on Russian imports. He stated, 'Our comprehensive approach to energy sourcing is dictated by market availability and global conditions, and we lack information on specific import cessation.' The MEA also reiterated that India-US ties remain robust, anchored in mutual interests and democratic ideals, resilient against external pressures. Jaiswal noted, 'The broad strategic partnership between India and the US is based on shared interests and democratic values, having successfully navigated numerous challenges and transitions. We are committed to advancing our bilateral agenda and are optimistic about future progress.' Earlier, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal informed Parliament of ongoing evaluations on the potential impacts of US tariffs and assured protective measures for national interests.
