In a heartbreaking maritime disaster, the number of confirmed dead has climbed to 68 after a migrant boat sank off Yemen's coast, officials reported. With 74 more individuals unaccounted for, search and rescue efforts are ongoing amidst challenging weather conditions, according to Xinhua news agency.
The ill-fated vessel, laden with Ethiopian migrants, succumbed to perilous seas off Abyan province. Rescue teams worked tirelessly throughout the day, recovering bodies along the southern coastline, while twelve individuals were rescued and taken to Shaqra General Hospital, according to medical sources cited by the Anadolu news agency.
The doomed journey highlights the ongoing migration crisis, with the International Organization for Migration noting that over 60,000 migrants have reached Yemen in 2024. These migrants, fleeing from the Horn of Africa, are often subjected to treacherous conditions, exploitation, and human trafficking in their bid to find a better life.
