A bipartisan coalition of US senators has introduced the United States-Taiwan Partnership in the Americas Act, aimed at fortifying Taiwan's diplomatic relations in Latin America. This comes as China intensifies its strategies to isolate the island nation globally, reports Focus Taiwan. Senators Jeff Merkley, Tim Kaine, John Curtis, and Pete Ricketts spearheaded the initiative, introduced on August 1.

The proposed legislation seeks to reaffirm US policy support for Latin American countries recognising Taiwan, while counteracting Beijing's influence. It suggests establishing a monitoring mechanism for China-backed projects in Taiwan's allies and demands regular Congressional updates on China's pressure tactics, alongside US countermeasures. Additionally, it aims to bolster collaboration between US embassies and Taiwan's diplomatic offices, fostering joint development projects and regional engagement.

Senator Merkley remarked on China's coercive efforts to reshape the global order, asserting that the bill supports nations maintaining ties with Taiwan, free from Beijing's intimidations. Senator Curtis echoed the need for transparency and US leadership, highlighting the bill's insistence on monitoring and responding to China's strategies. However, the act must pass both the Senate and the House to be enacted into law.

Since 2016, Taiwan has lost 10 diplomatic allies under China's pressure, significantly diminishing its global partnerships, Focus Taiwan noted. (ANI)
