Historic First: Indian Tricolour Flies High at Newcastle's Civic Centre

The Indian Consulate in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, marked a historic milestone by hosting the 79th Independence Day celebrations for the first time. The event took place at the city's Civic Centre, which graciously offered a prime-time slot for the occasion, as disclosed in an official statement.

Leading the celebrations was 'JM' Meenu Malhotra DL, the Punjabi-born Honorary Consul General of India in England, who made history by hoisting the Indian tricolour in Newcastle for the very first time. It was a landmark occasion for the Indian community in the North East of England. Following the flag-raising, speeches were delivered by Meenu Malhotra, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, and Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Jacqui Robinson.

As per the statement, the festivities began with drumming by the Mi Marathi Dhol Group and a classical dance by Madhura Godbole. The formal ceremony started at 11:00 AM with the national anthem and addresses from dignitaries. The event concluded with a lively Tamil flash mob by Spice FM. Noteworthy attendees included civic leaders, cultural icons, and business representatives.
