In a significant move to bolster law enforcement efforts in Washington, DC, the number of National Guard troops patrolling the capital is set to more than double. Enhanced by contributions from Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia, this deployment forms part of President Trump's federal strategy to address perceived lawlessness, The Hill reports.

Currently, 800 National Guard troops are stationed in DC. They will soon be joined by personnel from several states, including 200 from Mississippi, 300 to 400 from West Virginia, 150 from Ohio, and 200 from South Carolina. However, this increase has sparked debate over the necessity of such a visible military presence in low-crime areas, with some Republican governors declining to participate.

Critics have labeled President Trump's federal intervention a politicized measure, unnecessary amid a crime rate decline. Despite these criticisms, the administration maintains that the enhanced troop presence aims to protect federal assets and curb violent crime, although the exact role and conduct of the troops remain under scrutiny.
