Myanmar Shaken: Series of Earthquakes Highlight Seismic Vulnerability
Myanmar experienced a series of earthquakes, the latest being a magnitude 4.2 at 10km depth. Previous quakes included magnitudes of 3.6 and 3.8. The seismic activity underscores the country's vulnerability, wedged between four tectonic plates with a long transform fault contributing to its high seismic risk.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit Myanmar on Wednesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). This tremor, occurring at a depth of 10 km, was highlighted in an NCS statement shared on platform X.
The post detailed: "EQ of M: 4.2, On: 20/08/2025 18:16:29 IST, Lat: 16.38 N, Long: 95.89 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar." This follows a July 27 series where quakes of magnitude 3.6 and 3.8 also impacted the area.
With its position between four tectonic plates, Myanmar is exceedingly vulnerable to seismic activity, including potential tsunamis. The prominent Sagaing Fault elevates earthquake risk across key regions, affecting nearly half of Myanmar's population concentrated in cities like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon.
