Traders in Sikkim are expressing optimism following the reopening of the Nathu La Pass, a critical trade link between India and China that was closed in 2019. The decision marks a turning point in bilateral relations, with India and China agreeing to revive trade through three designated passes, including Lipulekh in Uttarakhand and Shipki La in Himachal Pradesh.

This development was announced after the 24th round of the Special Representatives' dialogue, co-chaired by India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The move is anticipated to inject vitality into regional economies and bolster cross-border trade.

Local traders, such as Anil Gupta from Gangtok, have welcomed the news, highlighting the potential to resolve pending bills and emphasizing the need to modernize the list of tradable goods, suggesting sugar and matchsticks for high demand. There are calls for more trade passes and overnight stays, while other traders, including IK Rasaily, have commended government officials for restoring trade ties. The reopening is also expected to stimulate cultural and spiritual exchanges, notably enhancing the Mount Kailash Yatra pilgrimage.
