Portugal has announced its decision to officially recognize the State of Palestine, with the formal declaration set for September 21, just ahead of a significant UN General Assembly meeting in New York focused on Palestinian statehood, according to Al Jazeera.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro made the decision following consultations with the country's president and parliament, marking the end of a 15-year political debate that began in 2011. This move aligns Portugal with other nations such as France, the UK, Australia, and Canada, which have recently signaled similar intentions.
The decision also comes in the wake of a UN inquiry suggesting Israel's recent military actions in Gaza could constitute genocide. Portugal had hinted at its plan to recognize Palestine back in July, citing the worsening humanitarian conditions and ongoing threats in the region as key factors. As of April 2025, approximately 147 countries have recognized Palestine, reflecting widespread global support for its statehood.
