India's Civil Defence Mega Drill: Operation Abhyaas Shakes the Nation
Operation Abhyaas, a nationwide civil defence mock drill, simulated various hostile scenarios in several Indian states and UTs. Conducted in response to a recent terror attack, these drills tested emergency preparedness, involving large-scale participation from civil defence volunteers, police, and other agencies. Operation Abhyaas, a countrywide civil defence mock drill, unfolded across various Indian states and Union Territories, simulating air raids, fire emergencies, and rescue operations. This exercise was a preemptive measure following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack orchestrated by The Resistance Front, which tragically claimed 26 civilian lives.
In the aftermath of the Indian military's Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan, the drills tested emergency responses in locations like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and others. Notably, a 15-minute blackout in New Delhi replicated wartime conditions, demonstrating the extent of preparedness measured during these exercises.
A diverse range of participants, including students and teachers, engaged in drills across 300 civil defence districts. These drills assessed the readiness of security services, first responders, and civilians to tackle complex emergencies. From evacuating high-rises to simulating bomb attacks, Operation Abhyaas sought to bolster national security vigilance.
