In a significant clarification, the Jammu and Kashmir Police stated on Thursday that Maulana Iqbal, a respected religious figure, was erroneously labeled as a terrorist by certain media reports. This followed his death along with 12 others due to Pakistani shelling in Poonch district.

The police highlighted that Iqbal, aged 45, had no links to any terrorist group, countering widespread misinformation on social media and by some news outlets. Legal action is promised against those spreading such false narratives.

The police urged media outlets to verify information from official sources to maintain public order and respect for the deceased and bereaved families. Misreporting in sensitive incidents causes unnecessary panic, they warned.
