Election Commission Resolves Voter Card Number Mix-up
The Election Commission has addressed the problem of voter cards sharing similar numbers by issuing fresh cards with new numbers. While instances were rare, affecting only one in four polling stations, the issue reportedly did not influence election outcomes. The problem traces back to discrepancies in number series assignments since 2005.

The Election Commission has successfully resolved the issue concerning voter cards that had similar numbers, issuing fresh cards with new numbers, according to sources on Tuesday.
The occurrence of these duplicate electoral photo identity card (EPIC) numbers was rare, with an average of only one per four polling stations. Field verification confirmed these similar numbers belonged to genuine voters in different constituencies and polling stations, ensuring it did not impact any election results.
The resolution followed accusations from opposition parties, such as TMC, of voter list manipulation, prompting the EC to tackle this longstanding issue. The root cause dates back to 2005 due to inconsistencies in assembly constituency alphanumeric series.
