Crisis in Banbhoolpura: Faheem's Death Prompts SIT Probe

The Uttarakhand High Court has mandated a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the controversial death of Faheem during February's Banbhoolpura riots in Haldwani. The move comes after noticeable shortcomings in the initial investigation, leading to a transfer request for the investigating officer.

The court's decision stems from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Faheem's brother, Parvez, which alleged a lack of proper investigation despite a directive from the Nainital Chief Judicial Magistrate's court to investigate and report. The court described the initial police report as insufficient.

The case, alleging Faheem was shot by unknown assailants rather than being directly linked to the riot violence, reflects severe lapses in police procedure, prompting the high court to assure it will closely monitor further investigations.
